108 CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT AND METHODS

Description
This online course introduces students to construction equipment and heavy civil construction methods, with a focus on equipment selection, productivity, economics, and site development. Topics include earthwork, excavation, loading and hauling equipment, cranes, compressors, pumps, equipment production rates, and the fundamentals of construction equipment management. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Become familiar with construction equipment and their capabilities
- Understand standard terminology, designations, sizes, and gradations of equipment
- Understand the elements of equipment cost and evaluate investment alternatives
- Develop a basic understanding of unit price and earthwork quantities
- Describe the characteristics of heavy civil construction projects
- Learn how to best utilize construction equipment on site work and heavy civil projects
- Properly select heavy equipment based on applications, utilization, productivity, and other factors
- Utilize the CAT Handbook to determine production rates for heavy equipment
- Demonstrate awareness of construction safety related to earth moving operations
- Develop a structured estimating process in unit price estimating

Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week. Class work must be completed before the following Monday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class but the reading assignments will be made available in advance. Modules will become available on dates posted on the course calendar.
