Description

This online course provides a foundational understanding of construction materials, methods, and systems to support career advancement and construction certificate programs. Each week focuses on a material category, a construction process, and a building system, with opportunities to explore workplace applications. Students will also research and report on sustainable ("green") construction practices related to the course topics.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Be able to recognize quality control procedures for various materials
  • Understand the physical limitations of the materials we are studying
  • Know where to find information about materials when needed
  • Know the relevant history of each material
  • Be familiar with material manufacturing processes
  • Understand how the materials we are studying are used in construction
  • Understand the regulatory environment under which materials are manufactured and incorporated into new structures
  • Know the important aspects of how each material is used in construction processes

Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week. Class work must be completed before the following Monday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class but the reading assignments will be made available in advance. Modules will become available on dates posted on the course calendar.
