Description

This online course focuses on identifying, managing, and reducing construction-related risks to promote safe and productive jobsites. Students will learn risk management strategies, safety responsibilities, hazard prevention, equipment maintenance, and problem-solving techniques, along with the documentation and insurance principles essential to effective construction management. (See Learning Objectives for more details)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the risk management duties of the construction supervisor
  • Be able to establish a good construction safety program for your crew and job site even if your company does not have a formal safety program
  • Identify and encourage human factors to achieve a zero-accident workplace.
  • Explain potential hazards similar to those that create the highest number of accidents and how they can be prevented
  • Know how to participate in a safety inspection conducted by a regulatory agency
  • Recognize risk within the construction work environment
  • Know how to prepare a plan for project loss control that includes construction insurance, protection of underground utilities, and controlling job site theft
  • Understand how to manage crisis situations
  • Know how to conduct accident investigations
  • Understand the role that construction contractual relationships play in controlling job site safety (includes managing subcontractors for safety compliance).
  • Be able to explain the indirect and hidden costs of construction accidents
  • Understand the roles of commitment, attitudes, and training within an effective safety program
  • Know where to find reference material and information about OSHA standards, Guide Publications, and regulatory information
  • Explain Experience Modification Rate and determine the effect the rate has on your labor costs. Be able to perform calculations using the EMR

Time

Each week students will have online class discussions and a quiz. Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week. Class work must be completed before the following Monday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class although reading assignments will be made available in advance. Actual dates that modules will become available will be posted in advance on the course calendar.
